Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved as a transformative technology across many disciplines, including dentistry. This review paper explores the application of AI in caries detection, highlighting the transition from traditional image processing techniques to advanced machine learning and deep learning models. It discusses the enhanced diagnostic accuracy, efficiency, and consistency achieved when AI is integrated with clinical expertise, especially in radiographic caries detection. Furthermore, the study reviews current AI-enabled software tools such as Logicon, Pearl Second Opinion®, Overjet Caries Assist™, and VideaHealth, noting their roles in clinical decision support and dental education. Beyond caries detection, the paper examines AI’s contributions in CBCT analysis, implant planning, periodontal diagnostics, and restoration evaluation. Despite these advancements, the implementation of AI also presents significant challenges, including data bias, model transparency, ethical concerns, and regulatory hurdles. Emphasizing AI as a diagnostic adjunct (not a replacement) this paper advocates for a collaborative approach, where clinicians remain central in interpreting AI outputs while leveraging its capabilities to improve patient care and long-term outcomes.
