Automated Diagnosis of Dental Caries and Periodontal Disease from Radiographic Images Using Artificial Intelligence

Dental caries and periodontal disease are among the most common oral health problems worldwide, often leading to tooth loss and systemic health complications. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment planning and prognosis. This paper presents a deep learning-based automated system for detecting dental caries and periodontal disease from radiographic images. Utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the proposed method analyzes periapical and bitewing radiographs to identify pathological regions with high sensitivity and specificity. Experimental results demonstrate the system’s potential to support dental professionals by offering rapid and reliable diagnostic assistance, which can ultimately improve patient outcomes and optimize clinical workflows.
