Assessment of Phenolic Compound Accumulation in Fagopyrum esculentum Seeds under Salinity Stress

Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) as the main species of the Fagopyrum genus belongs to the Polygonaceae family and its seeds are an important source of rutin. A pot study in a completely randomized designs with three replications was conducted to assay that which salinity concentration (۰, ۲۵, ۵۰, and ۷۵ mM NaCl) enhanced the different phenolic compound content without decrement in the seed yield of F. esculentum. With increasing salinity level, the seed yield of the common buckwheat plant was decreased down to ۴۵.۲۴% in comparison with control; however, there was no significant difference between non-stress and low-stress conditions. The L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity as the main enzyme in the phenol’s metabolism was increased up to ۲۴.۱۰% in response to imposed salinity stress by NaCl. The total phenol content of F. esculentum seeds was significantly enhanced in response to salinity up to ۱۲.۵۶%. Also, in the salinity stressed plants the flavonoid content was about ۲.۵ times more than the unstressed plant. Under salinity stress, the rutin content was increased up to ۳.۳۸ times more than control. Taken together, according to obtained results salinity stress at ۲۵ mM NaCl can induce phenolic compounds in F. esculentum seeds without any reduction in seed yield.
