Mental Health Literacy and Quality of Life in Iranian Medical Students

Aims: This study investigated the dimensions of mental health literacy and its relationship with quality of life among students at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences. Instrument & Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized a stratified cluster sampling method involving ۲۲۰ students in ۲۰۲۴. Data were collected using a Mental Health Literacy Scale and a Quality of Life Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS ۲۴ with independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and logistic regression analysis. Findings: The means and standard deviations of mental health literacy and quality of life were ۸۳.۹۶±۷.۶۲ and ۳۳.۹۸±۶.۲۲, respectively. There was a significant relationship between mental health literacy and the quality of life of students. There were significant correlations between mental health literacy and sex, education level, family history of mental illness, referral to a psychologist/psychiatrist, and place of residence (p<۰.۰۰۱). Additionally, there was a significant relationship between quality of life and sex, education level, and history of mental illness (p<۰.۰۰۱). Participants’ ability to recognize mental disorders, knowledge of available professional help, and attitudes toward help-seeking behavior were significantly associated with a family history of mental illness. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between mental health literacy and quality of life among students at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences.
