چکیده مقاله:
The integration of new technologies, specifically Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), has brought transformative changes to the landscape of English language learning, particularly in virtual learning environments (VLEs). This article critically examines how these immersive technologies influence learners’ motivation and the effectiveness of English language acquisition. Drawing from a review of recent empirical studies and theoretical frameworks, the paper analyzes the core affordances of AR and VR—interactivity, experiential learning, contextualization, and emotional engagement—and their correlation with motivational and cognitive outcomes. The study also explores various pedagogical approaches to integrating AR/VR in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, identifies key challenges faced by educators and learners, and provides recommendations for maximizing the educational benefits of these technologies. Findings indicate that, when appropriately implemented, AR and VR offer significant potential to boost student engagement, enhance situational motivation, and facilitate richer, more meaningful language learning experiences. The article concludes by outlining implications for practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, and suggests future research directions to further elucidate the long-term impact and optimal strategies for technology-enhanced language education. In particular, this paper analyses both qualitative and quantitative data from a range of international studies to provide a comprehensive overview of outcomes across different age groups and learning contexts. Special attention is given to the ways AR and VR personalize learning processes and enable differentiated instruction, thereby catering to diverse learner profiles. Furthermore, the study reviews cutting-edge applications and projects, highlighting the innovative potential of immersive technology for developing communicative competence and cultural awareness. By synthesizing findings from controlled trials, case studies, and meta-analyses, the article offers a nuanced perspective on how AR and VR technologies address common motivational barriers such as boredom and language anxiety. The unique characteristics of virtual immersion, including the creation of a safe space for communicative experimentation, are explored in depth. Additionally, the review addresses infrastructural, pedagogical, and ethical considerations essential for sustainable integration. Ultimately, the study underscores the importance of ongoing teacher training and institutional support. The discussion calls for further interdisciplinary research and provides actionable guidelines for optimizing AR/VR use in language education, with the goal of shaping more inclusive and effective virtual learning environments.
