Application of Plant Extract as an Eco-Friendly Scale Inhibitor

Extract of natural plants is one of the most important scale and corrosion inhibitors. They are readily available, nontoxic, environmentally friendly, biodegradable, highly efficient, and renewable. Incompatible water mixing and formation of various scales in water injection operation is the main challenge which decreases the operation efficiency. The present paper focuses on the inhibition effect of Rosemary extract for calcium sulfate scale. To this end, static compatibility tests were conducted at different concentrations of Rosemary extract and reservoir temperature. The extraction of active species was performed using soxhlet apparatus and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to determine the main functional groups in Rosemary extract. The experimental results demonstrate high percent inhibition efficacy i.e., ۹۵% using Rosemary extract at a concentration of ۸۰۰ ppm.
