Gas hydrates, crystalline solids composed of water and gas molecules, present significant challenges in petroleum engineering operations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of gas hydrates formation mechanisms, their impact on petroleum production, and strategies for prevention and mitigation. The formation conditions, thermodynamic properties, and methods of hydrate detection are discussed, along with case studies highlighting the consequences of hydrate formation in various petroleum engineering applications. Furthermore, this paper explores innovative approaches, such as chemical inhibitors, thermodynamic inhibitors, and hydrate dissociation techniques, to address the challenges posed by gas hydrates in petroleum engineering operations.
