چکیده مقاله:

Modernizing refineries is an imperative step to enhance their efficiency and adaptability in the rapidly changing energy market, particularly in the midst of rising global crude oil demand. This modernization process involves several key aspects that are critical for ensuring refineries can effectively transition into the petrochemical era. Key Aspects of Modernizing Refineries Technological Advancements Modern refineries are integrating advanced technologies to optimize their operations. The world is undergoing a fundamental energy transition, and at the center of this shift lies a transformative change in the demand structure for crude oil. No longer is transportation fuel the sole driver of oil consumption. Instead, petrochemicals used to produce everything from plastics and fertilizers to detergents and clothing fibers are taking center stage. As the energy industry prepares for a future where sustainability and efficiency are paramount, refineries must evolve. Modernizing traditional refining facilities is no longer just about upgrading equipment it's about redefining purpose. Refineries of the past were designed to maximize gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel production. But now, the need is to reconfigure these facilities to produce more light olefins (like ethylene and propylene) and aromatics (such as benzene and toluene) the foundational ingredients of the petrochemical sector. This review aims to outline the necessity of refinery modernization, its alignment with global crude oil demand trends, and how strategic overhauls can fuel the next era of growth in a petrochemically driven economy. The term 'petrochemical era' signifies a new chapter in the oil and gas industry. Traditionally, the majority of a barrel of crude oil was refined into fuels. However, as electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy reduce demand for gasoline and diesel, the industry is pivoting toward high-value chemicals.
