Sociolinguistic Evaluation of Iranian ELT Textbooks: Prospect ۳ in Focus

The goal of this study is to analyze the English textbook Prospect ۳ from a sociolinguistic perspective. This book is taught in grade three of junior high schools in Iran. The present study is of a qualitative nature, and in order to analyze the textbook, the Sociolinguistic Textbook Evaluation Rubric (Atar & Erdem, ۲۰۲۰) was utilized, which comprises six distinct items. The result of the analysis indicates that although the textbook considers the linguistic ecology of the learners, there are no examples of nonnative and nonstandard accents/varieties of English, native-non-native and non-native-non-native instances of interaction. This textbook contains examples of successful bilingual individuals, fosters intercultural communicative competence, and impacts English learning among a select group of individuals within the country. By evaluating a textbook on sociolinguistic issues, this study makes a significant contribution to the existing literature while also offering suggestions for its improvement.
