Evaluation of the Efficacy of Asparagus in Compensating for Folic Acid Deficiency in Patients with Macrocytic Anemia

Macrocytic anemia is a hematological disorder characterized by enlarged red blood cells with impaired oxygen-carrying capacity, primarily caused by deficiencies in folic acid or vitamin B۱۲. Folic acid plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis and cell division, and its deficiency can lead to hematopoietic dysfunction and macrocytosis. In recent years, increasing attention has been given to nutritional interventions and natural sources of folate, including Asparagus officinalis. This study systematically reviews previous research on the bioactive compounds present in Asparagus officinalis, the mechanisms of folic acid absorption from this plant, and its potential effects on improving macrocytic anemia. Findings suggest that asparagus may serve as a natural and effective source of folic acid, contributing to hematopoietic improvement. However, further clinical trials are required to confirm its efficacy and establish appropriate dosage recommendations.
