چکیده مقاله:
This study sought to investigate letter writing problems among a cohort of 35 undergraduate Iranian intermediate EFL learners at Urmia University. Candidates wrote application, inquiry, and reply to inquiry letters. The students were enrolled in a letter writing course and were asked to write a letter each session. They wrote their first letter without any instruction on how to write letters and were taught the principles from the second session. The letters were analyzed for content and structure, including number of words, number of sentences, incorrect grammatical structures, inappropriate or incorrect lexical items, etc. Quantitative analyses indicated that candidates used more of the function words and simple type of sentence structures. Furthermore, the number of incorrect grammatical structures and inappropriate lexical items decreased as the course proceeded, meanwhile spelling and punctuation problems increased. Overall evaluations indicated that the students’ English letter writing abilities improved as they received further instruction. The applications of a two-way ANOVA revealed a statistically significant main effect for letter type but not for gender, F(3, 118) = 57.53, p = .00 (partial eta squared = .59). While detailed findings are discussed in the paper, the immediate implication is that letter writing is a special genre of writing which requires focal attention to be developed properly.
