Vitamin D Supplement Improves Fatty Liver Disease: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Fatty liver disease is when fat builds up in your liver. Too much fat will accumulate when the liver does not process and break down fats as it normally should. People tend to develop fatty liver if they have certain other conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, or high triglycerides. Vitamin D can improve fatty liver symptoms due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and insulin-sensitizing roles. This study aimed to summarize the data obtained from clinical trials on the effect of vitamin D supplements on various parameters associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Search Strategy: Articles between ۲۰۰۰ and ۲۰۲۳ were chosen through searching scientific databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science, by using the keywords of Fatty Liver Disease, NAFLD, Steatosis, Vitamin D, Cholecalciferol, ۱,۲۵ (OH)۲D۳, and Calcitriol. Finally, ۴۳ articles were studied. Results: It seems that Vitamin D can improve the symptoms of fatty liver disease by decreasing the fat content of the liver, levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase enzymes (AST), pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as ILB, and IL۶, and levels of a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein as an inflammatory factor. In addition, vitamin D can positively decrease levels of cholesterol, LDL, and TG and increase HDL. Conclusion and Discussion: According to data extracted from considered articles, Vitamin D can improve fatty liver disease by decreasing inflammation factors, liver enzymes, and lipid profiles. All these effects make Vitamin D a promising supplement for the treatment of fatty liver.
