چکیده مقاله:

Seismic hazard zoning maps serve as valuable tools for understanding earthquake risks, but theyare subject to limitations and uncertainties that can affect their ac-curacy in predicting future majorearthquake accelerations. It’s essential to recog-nize these challenges and continuously update andrefine these maps based on the latest scientific research and data. The ۱۲ November ۲۰۱۷ Sarpol-Zahab Mw۷.۳ earthquake, was a significant seismic event representative to its extensive damage in theaffected areas. The acceleration values depend on the location and distance from the earthquake’sepicenter. The earthquake occurred in a zone for which a M>۷.۰ earthquake was not expected. The ۶February ۲۰۲۳ earthquakes in southern Turkiye occurred in the East Anatolian Fault zone. The coupleevents were unexpectedly powerful and caused widespread damage to infrastructure, loss of life, andsignificant disruption to daily life in the affected areas. The occur-rence of Mw۷.۸ and then Mw۷.۵earthquakes in the same day. Such level of seismic hazard might not be predicted by earthquakehazard zoning maps of Turkiye. The inefficiencies of seismic hazard zoning maps are studied anddis-cussed herei.
