Synthesis of Shape Memory Polyurethanes Containig Azobenzene Groups asChain Extender in Backbone and Their Mechanical Properties

In this work, two different polyurethanes containing ۱,۴-butanediol (PU-BDO) and azobenzenebasedchain extender (PU-AZO) were synthesized. For PU-AZO, an azobenzene derivative, named۴,۴′ -dihydroxy azobenzene (DHAB), was utilized as a chain extender. The mechanical properties ofthese PUs were studied and the results showed that the presence of azobenzene bulky groups aspendant groups could significantly affect different mechanical properties of the resulting PU. Thisstudy shows that the mechanical properties of PU could be manipulated by using different chainextenders.
