Metafictional Elements in Changing Places of David Lodge: A Postmodern Reading

British author David Lodge has a unique talent. His campus trilogy —Changing Places, Small World, and Nice Work—made him the most well-known. Regarding modern, postmodern literature, Lodge's Campus trilogy is still considered canonical. Many campus novels have metafictional solid elements, and the author attempted to analyze some of the components that enable such a flawless construction. At the metafictional level, the story revolves around an academic exchange, which may serve as a vehicle for Lodge's exploration of the craft of fiction as he tackles the problem of intertextual communication in a society driven by an obsession with change. Based on the present study's findings, using self-reflexive narrative, intertextual allusions, and genre manipulation, Lodge breaks down the set reality, making reading dynamic and engaging. The metafictional elements, which mirror the characters' perplexing yet transformative experiences, reinforce the central themes of cultural exchange and identity fluidity. The reader actively participates in deciphering meaning and considering the fundamental character of fiction.
