The Effect of Ginger on Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting among Patients Undergoing Upper and Lower Limb Surgery: ARandomized Controlled Trial

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is one of the most common sideeffects associated with anesthesia. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the effectof ginger on severity and incidence of nausea and vomiting after lower and upper limb surgery.Methods: In this triple-blinded clinical trial, ۶۶ eligible patients were randomly assigned tothe intervention and control groups. The intervention group received four ۲۵۰ mg gingercapsules and the control group received ۴ placebo capsules two hours before surgery. Incidenceand severity of nausea and vomiting immediately after the surgery and ۲, ۴, ۶ and ۸ hours afterthe surgery were evaluated.Results: The results of this study showed that the use of ginger capsules significantly reducesthe incidence and severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting at different hours after surgerycompared to placebo, p<۰.۰۵, irrespective of the gender and the age of the patients.Conclusion: Use of ginger is effective in decreasing postoperative nausea and vomiting.However, further studies in comorbid patients are required to verify these outcomes.
