The Mediating Role of Academic Resilience in the Relationship between Academic Stress and Academic Burnout in Collegiate Students of Foreign Languages

The current study was undertaken on a sample of Iranian university students of Foreign Languages to determine the relationship between academic stress and academic burnout with a view to the mediating role of academic resilience. ۱۷۵ students of English Language and Literature and French Language and Literature were selected using cluster random sampling. The variables were measured by recourse to Gadzella’s Educational Life Stress Questionnaire (Gadzella, ۱۹۹۱), Samuels’ Educational Resilience (Samuels, ۲۰۰۴), and Academic Burnout Questionnaire (Salmela-Aro and Näätänen, ۲۰۰۵). The statistical analyses of the data were carried out using AMOS and Path Analysis which showed that the model fit the data well. There was also significant and positive correlation between Academic Burnout and Academic Stress (r=۰.۲۰), significant negative correlation between Academic Stress and Academic Resilience (r=-۰.۴۲), and a significant negative correlation between Academic Resilience and Academic Burnout (r=-۰.۳۷). In terms of the implications accruing to this study, the hope is for it to create grounds for undertaking continued experimental research on these variables so that the effectiveness of interventions geared to increasing Academic Resilience and reducing Academic Stress can be probed with a view towards the effects.
