Cognitive Maps in Human Wayfinding: A Brief Narrative Review

Spatial navigation or wayfinding, as an interplay of several cognitive processes, have gained the attention of many scientists and researchers in different fields. One of the cognitive processes that is a base for wayfinding is cognitive map development. Although some studies have concentrated on cognitive maps in wayfinding, further investigation is needed. The overall results of these studies suggest that there is a wide variety of cognitive maps shaped and used by people. This study presents a narrative review of different cognitive maps used by people in wayfinding. Three keywords including cognitive map, spatial navigation, and wayfinding have been searched in three most relevant research databases. Out of about ۲۰۰ articles, ۲۰ of them which we were from ۲۰۰۰ upwards, have been selected. The final outcome of this paper is a general categorization of different cognitive maps.
