The Impact of Literature on the Improvement of Listening Abilities of Iranian Major students Learning English as a Foreign Language. For a long time language teachers have been trying to motivate their students in class activities and help them to increase their English proficiency. Meanwhile teachers have always been in the search of modern methodology and techniques. The tendency has been towards carefully chosen materials in order to stimulate students’ interests more than ever before. This research was designed to investigate the impact of literature on the improvement of listening Abilities of Iranian Major students Learning English as a Foreign Language.۷۴ students studied in Ardabil Azad University were selected. They were assigned into two groups: Experimental group and control group. The experimental group received a three month instruction in which some interesting short stories and plays were taught. The control group, on the other hand, received the ordinary materials during the same period of time. At the end both groups were given a general proficiency test. The data were analyzed to determine whether there was a significant difference between the performance of the control group and the experimental group. The results of the second proficiency test indicated that the number of the average students in E. G. was ۱۱ whereas in group C.G. it was ۱۰. The number of excellent students in C.G. was ۳ whereas in E.G. it was ۹. The number of poor students in E. G. was ۱۷ whereas the number of poor students in C. G. was ۲۴. In these graphs, the students have been divided into three groups of excellent, average and poor. The number of excellent, average, and poor students in E. G. was higher than the same number in C. G.While the previous studies investigates the instructor’s function in improving the listening skills of language and literature students, the students’ unsatisfactory listening competency, limited hours devoted to the listening skill by motivating students, designing practical instructional booklets, and attending off-campus skill learning classes and courses This finding signified that the Literature-Based programme including short story and play had improved the students’ English Listening proficiency.Modern language teaching has undergone tremendous changes during the fifties and sixties. Most certainly the field will continue to develop and evolve. Therefore, a teacher needs to accept the responsibility of being continually informed of what is happening in the field and related areas – and why.
