Characteristics of Smart Hospital: A Review Study

Introduction: Exponential growth potential and increased capabilities of new technologies. Therapid development of healthcare, IT, and the recent development and implementation of the ideasof the Fourth Industrial Revolution show the prospect of shaping a completely different healthcaremodel. Smart hospital is the new generation hospital surpasses the limits of existing hospitals interms of quality care, patient safety, patient experience and productivity using related technologiesin the fourth industrial revolution. This review aimed to identify characteristics of smarthospitals.Methods: We conducted a narrative review to find definition of a smart hospital and draw itsservice categories and technologies. The review was based on keywords such as “smart hospital,”and we searched literature databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Google scholar. Fromthe search results, articles, books, and trending reports can explain a scientific explanation of themedical field was selected as the ultimate search target.Result: A smart hospital is a healthcare organization that uses ICT to create new value and visionon patient safety, quality of care, cost efficiency and patient centeredness, and make them quantitativelyavailable to patients and medical staff. Main characteristics identified in smart hospitalsinclude: digitalization all provided information in patient care process, using position detectionand tracking technology for rendering different services by measuring and monitoring the positionof object information. Using high speed communication network for overcoming the formerproblems in data collection, analysis and distribution; artificial intelligence-based decision supportsystems for diagnosis and treatment diseases. Technologies like IoT-based services connectvarious objects with sensors and communication functions to the Internet. Rendering supportiveand medical services through mobile devices such as cell phones, tablets. The provision of medicalservices by robots on human behalf is known as robot services. These services cover a widerange of areas, including surgery, rehabilitation, and nursing care. Applying VR applications inhealthcare to improve practitioners’ clinical skills, education, and training. The final feature ofsmart hospital is providing service through telemedicine.Discussion: This study identified characteristics of smart hospital. The result of study could beused to develop and spread smart hospitals by governments. We need more study to recognizeother aspects of smart hospital.
