Contribution of Iran in Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Studies: A Bibliometric Analysis

Background and aims: Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the healthcare industry withits innovative applications in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Iran is a countrywith a rich history of scientific and technological advancements, and the healthcare sector hasbeen no exception. To assess the contribution of Iranian researchers in AI healthcare studies, thisbibliometric analysis was conducted. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the trendsand patterns in AI healthcare research in Iran.Method: The study used Scopus, a comprehensive database of scholarly publications, to collectbibliographic data on publications authored by Iranian researchers in the field of AI healthcare.The search was conducted up until September ۲۹, ۲۰۲۲. A total of ۵,۷۷۶ documents publishedbetween ۱۹۹۲ and ۲۰۲۲ were included in the analysis. The collected data was then analyzed usingVOSviewer (Leiden University) and Bibliometrix (R package) to visualize the co-occurrencenetworks of authors, sources, organizations, international collaborations, keywords citations, andco-citations.Results: The results of the study revealed that Iranian researchers have published a growing numberof AI healthcare-related publications over the years. Iran ranked ۱۸th in Scopus in terms of thenumber of publications, with an average citation per document of ۱۳.۵۶. The University of Tehranwas the most active organization in this field, with ۱۱.۶۵% of publications, followed by TehranUniversity of Medical Sciences (۸.۸۴%) and Islamic Azad University (۸.۱۲%). The most activeauthors in AI healthcare research were Soltanian-Zadeh H. (۰.۹۳%), Zaidi H. (۰.۷۱%), and Shiri I.(۰.۶۹%). The most common formats for Iranian publications were original articles and conferencepapers. The study also found that Iranian researchers have mostly collaborated with researchersfrom the United States, Canada, Australia, and United Kingdom, respectively.Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive picture of the contribution ofIranian researchers to AI healthcare studies. The results show that Iranian researchers have madesignificant contributions to this field and are actively engaging in AI healthcare research. Thestudy highlights the need for greater participation from other Iranian institutions to maintain theincrease in publications in this field. The analysis also offers insights to academic researchers,decision-makers, and healthcare professionals on future research directions and collaboration opportunitiesin AI healthcare research.
