Serological survey of H۹N۲ influenza viruse in DomesticPigeons of Ardabil, Iran

Background and Aim : Pigeons can be carriers of some human and poultry pathogens andcontribute to transmission and spread of drug resistant infectious agents to human and poultry. Theaim of this study was to investigate serological prevalence of H۹N۲ subtype of avian influenzavirus in domestic pigeons of Ardabil.Methods : This cross-sectional study was conducted during first six months of ۲۰۲۲. One hundredand twenty unvaccinated domestic pigeons randomly selected different parts of Ardabil wereexamined. Blood samples were collected from the wing veins and samples were sent to serologicallaboratory. All sera samples were was tested by HI for detection of antibodies against H۹N۲ virus.Results : The birds with sera titer =>۴ (log۲) were considered as positive. The sera sample of ۱۸birds (۱۵%) out of ۱۲۰ were positive. This is the first report of sero- prevalence of AIV in domesticpigeons of Ardabil.Conclusion : The Results of this study showed prevalence of avian influenza viruse H۹N۲ amongpigeons. Improving the health and biosecurity, and continuously surveillance of the birds to controlthe disease is necessary.
