Hydropower & Sustainable Development

This paper examines hydropower’s role in sustainable development, its synergies with other renewable energy sources, and its position within energy systems into the future.Regional analyses of installed capacity compared to potential provide insights into the past development of hydropower, as well as future deployment opportunities.Hydropower’s potential vulnerability to climate change impacts, as well as the benefits hydropower offers in efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climatechange, are explored. The full benefits of hydropower can only be achieved when hydropower is developedin a sustainable way, meeting the need to avoid, mitigate or adequately compensate for any adverse social or environmental impacts. Therefore, this paper concludeswith an overview of efforts being made in the sector to ensure that the sustainability ofcurrent and future projects can be comprehensively assessed, and so constructivelyinform decision making.
