Getting ready for Autonomous Vehicles Case Study: Milan Metropolitan Area

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) have become a significant topic for today’s debate and researches, as an upcoming addition to urban life and infrastructures. Diffusion of them will produce significant impacts on the urban environment, mobility practices, urban space, and services. Up to now, many studies have mostly paid attention to the technical aspects and feature of the vehicles, but now it becomes important also to deal with the planning aspects to support the spread of these new vehicles since these new inventions are going to change the face of our cities in near future. These changes must be planned in order to have a positive effect on mobility practices, and on the urban landscape. This article was written based on a master thesis۲ done by the same author and with the help of a scenario-based approach. The aim is to suggest guidelines for future developments of AVs, according to the different situations that planners might face
