The historians of long fiction unanimously agree that a significant shift in the novel occurred around the late nineteenth century or the onset of the twentieth. Modern Fiction came into being around that time. There are specific features to the modern style of writing. The present study aims to describe and compare these features in two significant modern novels, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce and The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. The main features of the modern style of writing including the stream of consciousness, the universal themes of the novels, the despair and disappointment experienced by the characters due to the conditions of the era they lived in, the deterioration of religion and faith are studied and compared. The study portrays, for instance, how the stream of consciousness is used in two different ways in the novels. Also, the use of the features mentioned is supported by excerpts of the two books
