The portrayal of Feminine Wounds: Richard Wright’s Uncle Tom’s Children

The song of the black people, displayed in Richard Wright’s stories, is bitter and black. It signifies a long story of discrimination, tyranny and suffering. His characters are the men who bend, kneel down and die due to their race. On the other hand, women in Wright’s stories are under double pressure. They are not only the victims of the racist society in which they live, but also of a male dominating society by black men. They are portrayed as passive and inferior. They are submissive women who are not understood even by their husbands and are sometimes treated as vulnerable animals. In the oppressive society, depicted by Richard Wright, the personal dignity of the black female characters is even less obtained than that of black men. This study considers the racial problems of the African-American black people especially the female characters in Richard Wright’s Uncle Tom’s Children.
