چکیده مقاله:

The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies used in translating ۶۷۲ taboos used in the subtitles of ۴ English-language films into Persian. The researcher used two authorized subtitles and two non-authorized subtitles to extract taboos and then evaluated them based on and Baker(۱۹۹۲) and Davoodi(۲۰۰۹)'s taxonomies and evaluated them against the one introduced by Wardhaugh(۲۰۰۶). The results on the authorized subtitles indicated that the Baker's strategies of ‘translation by neutral words’ and ‘translation by omission’ and Davoodi's ‘euphemism’ and ‘censorship’ strategy have been used more. The results on the non-authorized subtitles indicated that Baker's strategy of ‘translation by cultural substitution’ and Davoodi's ‘taboo for taboo’ strategy have been used more. It was also concluded that the Baker's taxonomy is a comprehensive and complete classification, and the Davoodi's taxonomy is a simple classification, and the Wardhaugh's taxonomy is by no means a practical classification for at least examining taboos in the Persian-English language.
