Given the mortality rate due to traffic accidents, road safety is considered a matter of crucial importance. The first step to ensure road safety is to identify accident-prone road segments. Among others, mathematical and computer models are significantly reliable to identify such accident black spots. In this study, we used a fuzzy irregular cellular automaton model with three inputs including roughness index, the longitudinal profile of the current road segment, and the safety factor of the previous road segment, and an output including the safety factor of the current road segment. To investigate the results, a ۴۰km segment of a road, which was divided into ۱۰۰-meter sections, was considered. The results of the model were similar to the actual road safety factors with the accuracy of ۸۴.۲۴%. Moreover, further simulations revealed that road safety can be significantly improved by reducing the value of road roughness index.
