The effect of distance education on self-care of patients with type 1 diabetes

Introduction: Distance learning and follow-up are among the methods used due to the elimination of time and space constraints and the establishment of a caring relationship with the client. This study aimed to determine the effect of distance education by telephone and SMS on self-care in patients with type 1 diabetes.Methods: In this review study, Internet search studies between 2010-2011 were searched in Magiran, SID, IranMedex, Google scholar databases with Persian keywords type 1 diabetes, distance education, self-care. Criteria for inclusion of articles were conducting a clinical trial study, conducting a study in Iran, the Persian language of the article, and based on the criteria of Jadad, having a score of 3. Exclusion criteria were the inability to access the full text of the article and animal studies. Data analysis was performed qualitatively.Results: There were eight studies in the period. Studies showed that telephone and virtual education had increased the average score of self-care in patients after training and remote follow-up. The mean scores of self-care behaviors in the dimensions of diet adherence, physical activity, blood glucose self-monitoring, adherence to medicationregimen, foot care, and total self-care had a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Remote nursing provides nursing education to patients without time and places restrictions. In the studies conducted, telenursing led to the improvement of the quality of nursing care and the improvement of patients' self-care status.
