The ESP32, built by Espressif Systems, is one of the most popular processing brains in small and medium-sized robots: a low-cost system-on-chip that combines a dual-core processor, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in a single small package. At its heart are two 32-bit Xtensa LX6 cores running at up to 240 MHz and delivering up to about 600 DMIPS of computing power — enough for real-time motor control, sensor reading, and running several tasks at once with FreeRTOS. Its 520 KB of SRAM, plus external flash and PSRAM support, allows more complex programs.

The ESP32's greatest advantage over boards such as Arduino is its built-in wireless connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n at rates up to 150 Mbps, and classic Bluetooth plus Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This makes it a natural choice for phone-controlled robots, IoT robots, and telemetry systems; the robot can join a network and send sensor data without any extra module. Newer variants go further: the ESP32-S3 uses LX7 cores with an AI accelerator, while the ESP32-C3 uses a RISC-V core.

On the hardware side, the ESP32 offers a full set of interfaces: I2C, SPI, UART, a 12-bit analogue-to-digital converter, sixteen PWM channels, a pulse counter (PCNT) for reading encoders, and even a CAN controller called TWAI. A single ESP32 can therefore drive servos, read wheel encoders, and talk to sensors and motor drivers. In real projects it appears in service robots, educational robots, light drones, and warehouse robots, and with the micro-ROS framework it can join a robot network as a ROS 2 node.

The ESP32 has limits, too. The overhead of the wireless stack and the dual-core architecture make microsecond-precise timing difficult, so microcontrollers such as the STM32 suit high-frequency motor control or safety-critical systems better. Its 3.3 V logic needs level shifting for 5 V sensors, and current draw with active Wi-Fi reaches roughly 160 to 260 mA, although deep sleep brings it down to about 10 µA. The right choice is to use the ESP32 as the robot's "communication and control brain" and leave time-critical work to dedicated hardware.
