Symbiotic Radio: A Novel Technology Towards Smart Cities

The advent of smart devices is gradually forming the concept of smart cities. Smart cities compose of numerous devices and technologies aiming at monitoring and controlling most of the components affecting our bodies, homes, buildings, street, etc. Symbiotic radio is one of the key and most advanced technologies that enables battery-less smart devices to share data with corresponding access points. By employing the ambient RFsignals of TV, Wi-Fi or cellular networks, ambient backscatter tags can harvest energy and modulate data through backscattering waves. This paper reviews recent advances in backscattering communication technology and introduces modern applications of ambient backscatter communicationsapplicable in some different aspects of smart cities
