Mulberry, Morus alba (L.) is a potential source for curing debilitating diseases. The objective of thepresent attempt was to screen the effects of 3-week treatment of normal and streptozotocin-induceddiabetic brown rat, Rattus norvegicus (L.) using a leaf decoction of Mulberry, Morus alba (L.) (20g/L) on physiological, biochemical and histological parameters. Streptozotocin (STZ, 70 mg/kg incitrate buffer, pH 4.5) was administered through Intraperitoneal (IP)injection to induceexperimental diabetes one week prior to the treatment. Streptozotocin (STZ) caused typical diabeticsymptoms: polydypsia, polyuria, polyphagia, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia andhistopathological modifications in the pancreas, liver and kidney. The treatment of diabetic ratsusing the decoction of Mulberry, Morus alba (L.) (20 g/L) decreased blood glucose levels, inhibitedhepatic glycogen loss, and prevented potential histopathological alterations in the pancreas andkidneys. Administration of leaf decoction of Mulberry, Morus alba (L.) (20 g/L) was found to beable to regulate the altered metabolic processes.The results suggest that Mulberry, Morus alba (L.)leaf decoction (20g/L) is useful for diabetes mellitus management. Mulberry, Morus alba (L.)should be explored as medicinal plant to be used to control the diabetes.
