STRATEGIES TO MODIFY ANXIETY IN EMERGENCY NURSES: A REVIEW STUDY

Background and Aim : The emergency department is one of the most important components ofthe hospital. Emergency nursing is associated with a great deal of job stress that engage them withethical factors on a daily basis and are subject to ethical distress, a phenomenon that hasdevastating effects on nurses and patient care such as burnout, muscle strain, reduced accuratedecision making, decreased creativity, irritability, job dissatisfaction and reduced quality ofnursing care. Regarding to the inevitable stressors in the nursing profession and the need to preventthe psychological and behavioral effects of stress; it is necessary to take measures to reduce it.Methods : To achieve the study goals, 40 articles were collected using google scholar searchingengine and Anxiety , Stress and Emergency nurse keywords.Results : Based on the results, modification strategies are classified into 10 categories: mentalrelaxation(yoga, meditation), muscle relaxation, stress managing program(increasing knowledgeabout stress, adapting to stressful situations, anger and time management, resilience approach),aromatherapy(damascene essence, lavender essence ), learning communication skills (activelistening, verbal and non-verbal skills), problem solving training (identifying the problem,structuring the problem, evaluating best situations), emotional intelligence componentstraining(self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, accountability), assertiveness,aerobic exercises and acupuncture.Conclusion : Nurses as the largest health care provider should be exposed to the least of anxietyin order to be able to provide their clients with optimal care. Therefore, according to the findingsof the present study; mental relaxation, muscle relaxation, stress managing program,aromatherapy, learning communication skills, problem solving training, emotional intelligencecomponents training, assertiveness, aerobic exercises and acupuncture can help reduce the anxietyof emergency nurses.
