چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Gastrointestinal mucosa Candidiasis should be considered in patients who have gastrointestinal cancer or received either long-termsteroid treatment, broad-spectrum anti-microbial therapy. In the other hand, gastrointestinal Candidiasis and gastrointestinal carcinoma may mimic each other especially in the aspect of the clinical and radiological features. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of candidiasis inendoscopic specimens of patients with symptoms similar to gastrointestinal cancer.Materials and methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 210 endoscopic gastrointestinal biopsy specimens, isolated from 210 patientswith mimic symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer or gastrointestinal disorder, originally examined for determining of gastrointestinal candidiasis bymycological methods (microscopically by 10% KOH wet mount, histological examination and cultured in SDAC and CHROMagar Candidamedia) during 2018. Results: Patients underwent endoscopy to complain of pain and swelling in areas of gastrointestinal tract, vomiting and constipation. 13 cases of hyperplastic gastrointestinal candidiasis mimicking malignancy were identified according to their clinical and mycological features. Long-term antibiotic use (30%/92), recent anti-acid drug use (84/53 %), diabetes (15/46%) and anemia (15/46%) was the most predisposing factors for candidiasis. Conclusions: Candidiasis are seen as a part of gastrointestinal mucosa fungal infections, and their isolated and primary occurrence asgastrointestinal diseases is highly uncommon. Gastrointestinal candidiasis can also mimic various diseases, such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, granulomatous diseases, leukoplakia, and carcinoma, thereby misleading the treating team from correct diagnosis and management. Therefore, identifying the Candida lesion at the earliest possible time is crucial for the proper treatment and prevention of life-threatening consequences.
