Effectiveness of flaxseed oil on complications of diabetic patients

Purpose: Diabetes is a chronic disorder with complex pathogenesis and has many complications associated with it. An earlier report indicates that death rate of diabetic patients due to renal failure is approximately 17 times higher than of non-diabetic patients. Chronic antioxidant therapy may be useful in decreasing the risk of diabetic complications. As an antioxidant, flaxseed oil can cause a significant reduction in blood glucose level and an increase in insulin level. Method: PubMed and web of science were systematically searched and only clinical trial articles were used for this study. Results: It is demonstrated that increased oxidative stress could be one of the common pathogenic factors of diabetic complications and flaxseed oil showed modulation of oxidative stress via improved expression of antioxidant enzymes, thereby correcting ant oxidative defence system of kidney and decreasing in inflammatory status in diabetic kidney. Conclusion: In other studies it is proved flaxseed oil supplementation is useful in the treatment of brain dysfunction in diabetic rats but still there is no available study using flaxseed oil on diabetic humans; so more studies on this condition may be useful.
