چکیده مقاله:
Background and Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune and inflammatory demyelinating disease related to central nervous system (CNS) that is characterized by spinal cord syndrome, brainstem or cerebellar syndrome cognitive impairment. The gut microbial dysbiosis correlate with pathophysiology of MS. Few studies reported effects of probiotic supplementation on patients with MS. This review summarizes what is known regarding the effects of probiotic supplementation on clinical symptom in patients with MS. Search Method: Databases including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched until February 31th, 2019. Findings: These studies used different species of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus with different doses for between 12 weeks to 12 month in patients with MS. These results showed that expanded disability status scale (EDSS) scoring, gadolinium-enhancing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions (n-Gd+) reduced in these patients. Also, administration of probiotics improved anxiety, and depression and biochemical factors in MS. Conclusions: Administration of probiotic supplementation had beneficial effects in the treatment of MS. More studies are needed in the future for evaluating effects of probiotic in large sample of patients with MS.
