چکیده مقاله:
Background and Objective: Amount of lipids in saliva are associated with caries because they interfere with the protective role of saliva. The purpose is to investigate the level of saliva triglyceride and cholesterol in type 2 diabetic patients and to determine the relationship between these parameters in saliva and the status of dental decay.Materials and methods: This is a case-control study. In the diabetic population with at least 22 teeth, 50 patients with high triglycerides and cholesterol and 50 with normal range of these parameters (control) participated. From each patient, Non-stimulated saliva was collected for 5 minutes. All five tooth surfaces were examined for decay and DMFT of patients was recorded. Findings: There was a significant relationship between these parameters: serum cholesterol with saliva cholesterol, triglyceride in serum with saliva and with years of having diabetes, decay with the age of the patients and years of having diabetes. Also there wasn t a significant relationship between these parameters: salivary cholesterol and triglyceride with age of patients, decay with blood glucose levels. Conclusion: Salivary cholesterol and DMFT showed a significant relationship in study group, however, saliva triglyceride was not associated with DMFT in study and control group. There was a significant relationship between DMFT and salivary cholesterol, but this relationship was not found between salivary triglyceride and decay.
