Comparison of resistance index in Endometrial Color Doppler Ultrasonography between normal and ectopic pregnancies at early stages of pregnancy

Introduction: Despite diagnostic improvements in ectopic pregnancies, 50% of cases are not diagnosed in early evaluations. It seems that identifying the appropriate factors associated with the differential value of the type of pregnancy may play an important role. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the relationship between resistance index (RI) in endometre color doppler ultrasonography between normal and ectopic pregnancies at early stages of pregnancy. Methods: In this case-control study, the cases included 20 women with early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy and the controls included 20 women with normal pregnancy. Clinical information of the samples was recorded. Then, all samples were placed in a half sitting position and underwent color doppler ultrasonography at the intersection point between the uterine arteries and external iliac arteries, and the ultrasonography findings were recorded and analyzed. Results: The results of this study indicate that the mean endometrial thickness in the controls was significantly higher than the cases (p=0.031). However, the rate of previous abortion, history of ectopic pregnancy, adnexal mass and pelvic free fluid were significantly higher in the cases compared with the controls (p<0.05). Furthermore, the mean end-diastolic velocity and the peak systolic velocity in the cases were significantly lower than the controls (p<0.001). RI in case samples was significantly higher than the controls (p<0.001). Conclusion: Finally, the results of this study showed that the resistance index in the ectopic pregnancy group is higher than normal pregnancy. These results indicate that these indices are suitable criteria for predicting ectopic pregnancy.
