چکیده مقاله:

Traffic accidents are the major public health problem, in both developed and developing countries. Iran has one of the highest rates of traffic accidents in the world. Traffic accidents are the third leading cause of death in Iran (19.3 per 100,000).This study aimed to present the traffic accidents mortality trends in men and women of Fars province during a period of almost a decade. Methods In this time-series study data related to 186976 deaths for the period of 2008 to 2017 were analyzed. The Data related to the number of traffic accidents deaths were selected. These data were collected by death registration and classification system of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. The population for calculating the rates is the population enumerated by national census of Iran. To assess time trends in mortality over time, the mortality rate was calculated for each year. Results In Fars province for the period 2008-2017, on average, the yearly number of traffic accidents mortality is 1489 (37.7 per 100000). The trend of traffic accidents mortality rates in men is higher than women (about 4 times).Between 2008 and 2017, the traffic accidents mortality rates in men and women decreased significantly from 75 and 19 deaths per 100,000 in 2008, to 55 and 12.5 per 100,000 in 2017, respectively. Totally a decreasing trend was observed in traffic accidents mortality rates (46.7 to 32.9 per 100,000) (R_ = 0.8907).Conclusion Traffic accidents mortality rate ranked the Second place in 2008, and then reached to third place in 2017. Despite the decreasing traffic accident mortality rates, Fars province still has the largest share of traffic accident mortality in country (1371 deaths). Therefore applying this information can be useful to policy makers and managers for planning and implementing special interventions to prevent and limit future traffic accidents deaths.
