Background: Increasing Elderly Population is being an issue in developing countries like Iran. Consequently, the planning and support of the elderly and their importance. On the other hand, with increasing elderly population, the probability of accidents and traffic accidents increases due to physiological changes in this population group. Iran has a uniquely catastrophic status for road traffic injury incidence and fatality. The elderly account for a substantial number of the hospitalizations and fatalities due to traffic injuries. The purpose of this study investigation Epidemiological of accidents and traffic accidents leading to death in an aging population.Method: Databases have been PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, SID, and Iran Doc. The main keywords were epidemiology, accident, traffic accident and older people that were searched in the published papers during 2010-18.Result: About 40 related papers were reviewed. It is evident from this review that a large number of severe road traffic crashes (RTCs) occur due to collision of two or more vehicles and most of the victims are males aged between 68 and 76 years. Male pedestrian, drivers and passengers are more likely to be severely injured in comparison to females. One of the most prevalent causes of death among adults involved in the RTCs are head injuries and the majority of deaths occur prior to hospitalization. Mortality rates for RTCs are higher in summer, especially during midnight among all age groups. The most common individual and environmental risk factors associated with RTCs include lack of attention, getting trapped in the car, listening to music, fatigue and sleepiness, duration and distance and negligence of seatbelt usage while driving.Conclusion: The findings of the current study will be beneficial in prevention of RTCs and its associated complications and hence will be vital for policy makers, health service managers and stakeholder.
