Socioeconomic inequality in Years of life lost (YLL) due to road traffic accident in Iran

Background: Low socioeconomic status (SES) is generally associated with high mortality and morbidity, more disability, and poorer access to health care. Based on the previous research mortality and disability from the road traffic accident is higher among people with low socio-economic level. In this research, we aimed to quantitatively assess the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and years of life lost from road traffic accident (RTA).Methods: All people who died from Road traffic accident from March 2014 to February 2017 was selected. The data were taken from the traffic police department and legal medicine organization in Iran. The years of life lost was calculated in each year. In the second step, we calculate the relative concentration index (RCI) and absolute concentration index (ACI) to measure socioeconomic inequality in traffic-related Years of life lost. Data were then analyzed in Stata software.Results: In this study, 67384 people died from road traffic accident. The mortality rate from a road traffic accidents during the study was 23.9, 22.2, 21.5 & 20.4 per 10,000 accidents respectively. The concentration index was negative for YLL rate (-0.13) of RTA, indicating the higher concentration of the rates among deprived groups.Conclusion: Our results provide evidence to steer health policy which focuses on the disadvantaged group in society toward an integrated approach incorporating measures designed to tackle the root causes of disadvantage. Furthermore, the review highlights the need for population-based interventions to a reduction in socioeconomic inequalities in YLL from traffic accidents.
