Breast Reconstruction Surgery after mastectomy:Inevitable Necessity

Introduction & Aim: Changingin the mental image after mastectomy is inevitable. Breast reconstruction can improve mental, social, emotional and functional conditions of the individual. However, in Iran and even in advanced countries, a limited number of patients choose breast reconstruction surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the attitude of breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy on breast reconstruction surgery in 2018. Methods: This descriptive -analytical study was performed on 137 mastectomy breast cancer patients in the Omid Hospital in Mashhad. Sampling was done by census method. To collect data a standard questionnaire of mastectomy patients attitude towards breast reconstruction was used . After data entry to spss22, descriptive statistics (central indexes and dispersion) and inferential statistics (with regard to non-normality of Spearman, Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests) were used to analyze the data. Results: According to patients viewpoints, the highest reason of the patients tendencyfor breast reconstruction was respectively physician, spouse, family and then friends.76/6% of them said that if insurance helps to pay of therapeutic expenses, they will tend to have breast reconstruction. The fear of recurrence of the disease (3.88%), the difficulty of access to breast reconstruction hospitals (9.83%), and the fear of complications of surgery (7.73%), were the most important reason of reluctance to restructure the breast. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate,It is important for patients to be enough time assigned by the physician to explain the process of breast reconstruction. Also, holding training sessions for the patients and their families in order to explain about the benefits and complications of this surgery and insurance coverage of this surgery seems useful and necessary.
