چکیده مقاله:
BACKGROUND: The lid is a movable fold of skin and muscle that can be closed over the eyeball or open at will. Eye neoplastic lesions are common and their origin can be different parts of the eye or metastasis. Eyelid lesions are the most prevalent neoplastic lesions (90% of the total). therefore, early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to enhance survivability. Because of increasing in prevalence of eyelid lesions, this study aimed to study the eyelid tumors in Shahid Sadoughi Hospital of Yazd.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This descriptive study was conducted on eyelids lesions patients of pathologic department of Shahid Sadoughi Hospital of Yazd, the year between 1380 and 1389. Lesions were categorized according to malignant and benign lesions and histopathological factors. Another Factors of study were age, sex, type of neoplasm and anatomical location of lesions. Samples were collected using census method and study limitation was imperfection of patients history. It was also assured that the patients information will be kept confidential. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 and P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULT: A total of 119 patients (63 women and 56 men) were included. 39% of them were suffering from benign neoplasms and 63.9% of them were suffering from malignant neoplasms. The most prevalent eyelids lesion with 80% frequency was BCC (basal cell carcinoma) and SCC (squamous cell carcinoma) with 8% frequency is in the second rank Sebaceous glands carcinoma and malignant melanoma each with 5.3% frequency placed in the third rank. The rarest neoplasm in this study was malignant mixed tumor with 1.3% frequency (p value: 0.04). This tumor is often seen in and over 60 years old patients (p value: 0.04). Between 43 patients with benign lesions 67% of them were women and 33% of them were men. Between 76 patients with malignant lesions, 55% of them were men and 45% of them were women (p value: 0.12).CONCLUSION: These findings documented that BCC should be the first diagnosis in elderly patients with suspicious eyelids lesions. Prevalence of malignant eyelids lesions are 2 times more than benign eyelids lesions. therefore early diagnosis and treatment, is the best way to control the progression of malignant eyelids lesions and enhance survivability.
