چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objective. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a stable product of lipid peroxidation (LPO), and therefore MDA is frequently used as a biomarker of LPO. LPO level elevates in liver injury which can cause an increase in MDA serum levels. Lipopolysaccharide is used to induce liver injury. Earlier researches has shown that Anethum graveolens and Citrollus Colocynthis extracts can cause a decrease in total lipid levels due to their antioxidant properties. The aim of the present study was to compare protective effect of Anethum graveolens hydroalcoholic extract and Citrollus Colocynthis hydroalcoholic seed extract on lipid peroxidation in lipopolysaccharide-induced liver injury in Rat.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 48 Wistar rats that weighed 200-250 grams were selected and allocated randomly to six groups of eight each; including control, control groups receiving Anethum graveolens and Citrollus Colocynthis hydroalcoholic extracts, LPS, LPS groups receiving Anethum graveolens and Citrollus Colocynthis hydroalcoholic extracts. In the groups which received the extracts, 200 mg/kg of the extracts was injected daily and intraperitoneally from a week before the LPS. We used 5 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection of LPS to induce liver injury. Six hours later, MDA level was measured by a method based on Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA) assay. The intergroup comparison of the results was done by the method of one-way Anova, and the SPSS 16 was used to analyse the data. Results: The comparison of the obtained results showed that the level of MDA in LPS group increased (p<0.001), whereas in the LPS groups receiving the extracts MDA significantly decreased (p<0.001) ; however, no significant difference were observed in MDA level between LPS groups receiving Anethum graveolens and Citrollus colocynthis hydroalcoholic extracts . Conclusion: Noticing properties of Anethum graveolens and Citrollus colocynthis hydroalcoholic extracts and their effects on reducing the serum level of MDA, the extract of Anethum graveolens can be a better choice as a protective agent against LPO, however no significant difference were seen.
