Clinicopathologic analysis of cases with fibroadenoma sent to the pathology department of Shahid Sadoughi hospital in Yazd from 2007 to 2017

Background & Objectives: Fibroadenoma is the most common benign breast tumor in female, which, in many cases, is considered by the surgeon as benign tumor in palpating, but it is , somehow, scary for the patient and since it is often produced at an early age. Due to the beauty problems, it s difficult to make decisions about them. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the cases of breast fibroadenomas in patients referred to the pathology department during the years 2007 to 2017 in hospitals affiliated to Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd. Material & Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional analytical study at the pathology department of the hospitals affiliated to Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd. Data were recorded based on a pre-prepared checklist including: age, tumor location, tumor size, number of tumors, year of the surgery, tumor recurrence and histopathology, collected. Finally, the data were analyzed by SPSS version 21 software. Results: In this study, 310 subjects were studied, with the highest age group involved in subjects aged 14-24 years (84 cases). Also, the left side involvement (50%) was more common in comparison with right-side and bilateral involvement, and the majority of people (64.8) had a one mass. The results of this study showed that 234 cases (75.5%) of only fibroadenomatosis, 69 (22.3%) fibroadenoma with fibrocystic changes, 4 cases (1.3%), fibroadenoma with duct adenosis, 2 cases (0.6%) fibroadenoma with inflammatory diseases and 1 case of fibroadenoma associated with adenomatosis Lactating. The results showed that the location of tumor involvement in different age groups varies, but there is no significant difference between the age of the patients and the diseases associated with fibroadenoma. Also, the size and number of tumors do not correlate with the age of the patients. Conclusion: It seems that the fibroadenoma is prevalent higher in the younger ages, also, with much more left side involvement prevalence. The most common disease with fibroadenoma was fibrocystic changes. In addition, the results showed that the size and number of tumors did not have a significant relationship with the age of the patients.
