چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and one of the deadliest gastrointestinal cancers with a poor prognosis. The 5-year survival rate for all stages is 6%. The most common type of pancreatic cancer is adenocarcinoma. The survival rate of adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is directly related to grade of tumor and stage of tumor. Considering the fact that there has not been any research on pancreatic cancer in Yazd city, we decided to study the survival rate of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma in Yazd city from 2008 to 2014.Materials and Methods: This study was a retrospective analytical-cross-sectional study. A total of 83 patients with pancreatic cancer referred to hospitals in Yazd, Yazd s oncologists clinic and Ramezanzadeh Radiotherapy Center from 2008 to 2014. The sampling method was census. The information included age, sex, relapse, stage of tumor, tumor grade, type of treatment and ... were recorded. Using SPSS v.23.0, data were analyzed. Finally, patients survival was evaluated using the Cox formula.Result: Our results showed that the mean age of the patients was 60.77 ± 11.74 with a ranging from 15 to 89 years old, of which 27 (37.5%) were women and 45 (62.5%) were male. The mean survival rate for the whole study was 12.71 months with a standard error of 2.18. The 5-year survival rate was 9%. No significant relationship was found between age and sex with survival (p <0.05). But the type of treatment and grade of disease were significantly related to the survival rate (p <0.05). In patients with higher grades, the survival rate was reduced. Patients undergoing surgery also had better survival than other treatments, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Conclusion: This study showed that the survival rate of patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma is not significantly correlated with the age and sex, but the type of treatment as well as the tumor grade significantly affect the survival rate. Therefore, despite the weak prognosis, it seems that surgical treatment and timely diagnosis can have a significant effect on quality of life and improved patient survival. Of course, other factors such as tumor location, tumor type, tumor size, metastasis, and lymph node involvement can also affect the survival and prognosis of patients that require more extensive studies.
