Glossing as an Aid for Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Reading: Is it Useful and Practical

Glossing is as one of the strategies which is used as a help for reading comprehension and vocabularylearning. The present study aims to investigate the effect of glossing on reading comprehension textand vocabulary learning of students with low English proficiency. In addition to this, the gloss and noglossand the effect of two different types of glosses, L1 (Persian) and L2 (English) is compared forfinding the effect of each one on the students test performance. The participants of this study are 33English freshmen students at Velayat University in Iranshahr. They were divided into three groups of11 and assigned to read a text with highlighted low frequency words. One group had L1 glosses torefer to the meaning of the words in Persian, one group had L2 glosses and the control group had noglosses. After reading the text, the participants were given a reading test and a vocabulary test of glosswords. The participants also completed a student opinion questionnaire about their ideas abouteffectiveness of glossing. The results revealed that the group receiving L1 gloss outperformed thecontrol and L2 gloss groups. The findings of this survey also yield that the L2 gloss group performedbetter than the no-gloss group.
