Numerical analysis of the effect of projectile shape on plastic deformation zone in Taylor test

Taylor tests have been commonly employed to determine dynamic yield stress of solids at a high strain rate. In this study, the classic Taylor cylinder test, in which a right circular cylinder is projected at a rigid anvil is investigated and simulated at ABAQUS software. It is assumed the projectiles have been made from copper in the form of a cylinder with a length of 75 mm and a diameter of 19. The cylindrical projectile is modeled with four states, flat head, spherical head, parabolic head and sharp head. The collision is simulated with the projectile speed 83 m/s and 205 m/s. At first, the deformation of projectile with flat head is studied and compared with experimental test. The results show themaximum different between experimental results with simulation results are less than six present. Then, the effects of different projectile head on the deformation of projectiles are investigated. The results showed that, after collision the amounts of strain and dynamic stress decrease by increasing the distance from the tip of the projectile. Also the results showed that, plastic deformation of the projectiles with a sharp tip is more than the others cases.
