چکیده مقاله:

In recent years and especially in developing countries, water contamination caused by industrial development has been a serious problem. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX), mono aromatic and volatile hydrocarbons, are pollutants which exist in many fuels like gasoline and petroleum. BTEX compounds are severely harmful to human health because even in low concentrations, they cause extreme toxicity. In this paper, a commercial synthetic zeolite (Na-ZSM-5) was modified with an organic surfactant, HDTMA-Br in three different levels (50%, 100%, 200% of CEC of zeolite) to adsorb benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) compounds from water solution. Adsorption tests were done in batch conditions at the ambient temperature (20°C) and pressure. SMZ-100 (100% 0f CEC of zeolite) had the highest adsorption capacity. Adsorbents were characterized using FT-IR and characterization results proved the existence of surfactant on the surface of the adsorbent
