The purpose of this study was to investigate whether teaching critical reading strategies had any significant effect on intermediate EFL learners’ reading comprehension. To fulfill this study, 40 female students within the age range of 18 years studying at Ava Novin English language institute in Zahedan at intermediate level were selected from a total number of 40 participants based on their performance on an Oxford Placement test. They were randomly assigned to two groups of 20, control group and experimental. The same content (eight reading texts) was taught to both groups throughout the 19-session treatment with the only difference that the experimental group was taught critical reading strategies while in the control group the common comprehension-based approach was applied. At the end of the instruction, the piloted reading comprehension post-test parallel to the reading pre-test was administered to the participants of both groups after an interval of two weeks. Then the scores were analyzed by an ANCOVA. The results showed that there was no significant difference between performances of two groups. The results suggested that reading comprehension occurs under student’s involvement, indeed reading strategies instruction can effect reading comprehension.
